Melody Loom: shape a selected phrase
The deliberate pitch workspace for multi-selections. Treat synths and chords as one ordered phrase, preview changes locally, audition a window, and apply the result as one shared edit.
Selecting more than one item opens a compact action bar, not an editor. Choose Melody Loom when you want deliberate pitch work. The grid stays visible while the lower workbench lets you reshape the selected synths and chords, compare the original, audition the result, and apply the complete preview as one shared edit.
Selection
The selection action bar appears when a selection contains two or more objects. Build a selection by:
- Clicking the first node, then shift-clicking additional nodes to add them.
- Marquee dragging across an empty area of the grid to capture every node in the rectangle.
- Clicking a node, then pressing Ctrl/Cmd-A within a logical region to select all connected nodes.
- Selecting from the network sidebar, where Sources, nodes, and wires appear in a structured list.
Pitch macros
| Parameter | Type | Range | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Octave up / down | macro | Moves the phrase register while retaining its contour. | ||
| Scale step up / down | macro | Moves synth notes and chord degrees through the current key and scale. | ||
| Snap to key | macro | Moves each selected synth to the nearest pitch in the current key and scale. | ||
| Contour | macro | Shapes spatial order into a rise, fall, arch, or wave. | ||
| Chord tools | macro | Moves chord degrees, changes inversion, and applies close, drop-2, power, or quartal voicing. | ||
| Recipes | macro | Applies Lift, Wide Open, Staircase, or Constellation. Reseed rebuilds stochastic recipes deterministically. |
Velocity macros
| Parameter | Type | Range | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Velocity ramp | macro | Sets a curve across the selection: linear, exponential, logarithmic, or smoothstep. Define start and end values; the macro interpolates. | ||
| Beat accent pattern | macro | Boost every Nth note's velocity by a configurable amount. Useful for backbeat accents (every 2nd) or downbeat accents (every 4th). | ||
| Humanize velocity | macro | Adds small randomized variation to every selected velocity. Range is configurable; a small humanize avoids the machine-perfect feel that procedural music can drift toward. | ||
| Reset velocity | macro | Clears overrides; selected nodes return to their Source agent's dynamics. |
Duration macros
| Parameter | Type | Range | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duration ramp | macro | Same four curves as velocity (linear, exponential, logarithmic, smoothstep). Notes get progressively longer or shorter across the selection. | ||
| Articulation preset | macro | Sets every selected note to staccato (short), nonLegato (default), or legato (sustained). Quick way to change the feel of an entire phrase. | ||
| Humanize duration | macro | Small randomized variation on durations. Pairs well with humanize-velocity for an organic feel. | ||
| Reset duration | macro | Clears overrides; selected nodes return to their Source agent's articulation. |
Advanced Batch Editor
Wire timing, phrasing, humanization, routing, and modifier controls live in More edits, which opens the non-modal Advanced Batch Editor. One section is expanded at a time so the grid remains the primary context.
| Parameter | Type | Range | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Set timing mode | macro | Switch every selected wire to distance, beats, or milliseconds at once. | ||
| Set timing value | macro | Set every selected wire's travel time to a specific number (in the current timing mode). | ||
| Wire delay ramp | macro | Apply a ramped delay across selected wires using one of the four curves. The first wire gets the start value; the last wire gets the end value; intermediates interpolate. | ||
| Apply swing | macro | Add a swing offset to every selected wire's timing. Pairs well with selecting all wires going to a hi-hat for shuffled feel. | ||
| Reset wires | macro | Clears overrides; wires revert to default distance-mode timing. |
Why this is a compositional surface
Most music software treats bulk editing as cleanup. Melody Loom treats the selected set as playable material: pull individual tiles, establish a contour, audition the visible 16-target window, compare against the original, then commit only when the relationship works.
Melody Loom also bridges manual and generative composition. Direct edits to procedural synths or chords are previewed as a materialization into manual values, and the summary states that consequence before Apply. You compose by reshaping a generated result without silently changing its mode.
